It was here, on March 9, 1842<\/strong>, that Francisco Lopez<\/strong>, a native Californian, made the first recorded discovery of gold in California-three decades before the famous Gold Rush.<\/p>\n While searching for stray horses, Lopez stopped near a creek in what is now Placerita Canyon<\/strong>, located about 3 miles east of Newhall<\/strong> and 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles<\/strong>. As his horses grazed, Lopez dug up some wild onions and discovered a small gold nugget hidden among the roots. This discovery led Lopez and others to search the surrounding streambeds, uncovering more gold in the area and starting the quest for California’s precious metals.<\/p>\n To honor this rich historical moment, the Santa Clarita Trail Race<\/strong> embraces a gold and mining theme<\/strong> throughout the event.
